How this calculation works

Litres used = distance ÷ 100 × fuel economy (L/100km). This scales your car's consumption rate to the actual trip length.

Total fuel cost = litres used × price per litre. This is the amount you can expect to spend filling up for the trip.

Cost per kilometre = total cost ÷ distance. It is a handy figure for comparing trips, vehicles, or splitting costs with passengers.

Worked example

A 500 km road trip in a car that uses 8 L/100km, with fuel priced at 1.60 per litre, needs 500 ÷ 100 × 8 = 40 litres, costing 40 × 1.60 = 64.00 in total, or 0.128 per kilometre.

What changes real-world fuel economy

Fuel cost vs. public transport

For a solo commuter, public transport is often cheaper per trip than driving once fuel, parking, and wear are counted, especially in cities with tolls or congestion charges. But once a car carries two or more people, the fuel cost per person can undercut individual transit fares, particularly on routes transit does not serve directly.

For a fair comparison, add parking and tolls to the fuel cost above, then divide by the number of occupants to get a genuine per-person figure to weigh against transit ticket prices.

How do I find my car's L/100km figure?
Check your vehicle's manual, window sticker, or manufacturer spec sheet for the official combined figure. For a real-world number, divide litres added at a fill-up by the kilometres driven since the last fill, then multiply by 100.
How do I convert miles per gallon to L/100km?
Divide 235.21 by your mpg (US) figure, or 282.48 by your mpg (UK/Imperial) figure. For example 30 mpg (US) is roughly 235.21 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km.
Does this account for tolls, parking, or wear and tear?
No. This calculator only estimates fuel cost. For a full trip budget, add tolls, parking, and a per-km allowance for maintenance and depreciation separately.
Why is my real fuel bill higher than the estimate?
Manufacturer economy figures are measured under ideal lab conditions. City driving, hills, cold starts, air conditioning, cargo weight, and aggressive acceleration can all push real-world consumption well above the rated figure.
Is my trip data stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or saved.
How can I lower my fuel cost per trip?
Keep tyres at the recommended pressure, avoid harsh acceleration and braking, remove unnecessary roof racks or cargo, use cruise control on highways, and combine short errands into one trip to avoid repeated cold starts.
Does speed really affect fuel economy that much?
Yes. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so fuel economy typically worsens sharply above about 100 km/h. Driving 120 km/h instead of 100 km/h can increase consumption by 15–20%.
