About area units

Area measures a two-dimensional surface and is expressed in squared length units, so it scales with the square of length: doubling a side quadruples the area. The square metre is the SI unit. Land is measured in hectares (10,000 m²) in most of the world and in acres (4,046.86 m²) in the US, UK and farming contexts.

Because area grows with the square, unit factors are the length factor squared — for example 1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 10,000 cm².
