How this calculation works

The Navy method estimates body fat from a handful of circumference measurements plugged into a logarithmic regression formula originally developed for military fitness screening. Every measurement is converted from centimetres to inches before the calculation, since the original formula was built and validated in imperial units.

For men, the formula uses waist minus neck circumference and height: body fat % = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450. For women, it adds hip circumference: body fat % = 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log₁₀(height)) − 450.

Once body fat percentage is known, fat mass is your weight multiplied by that percentage, and lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water) is whatever remains: weight minus fat mass.

Worked example

A man 175 cm tall with a 38 cm neck, 85 cm waist, and 75 kg body weight comes out to about 10.6% body fat, in the athletic range. That works out to roughly 7.9 kg of fat mass and 67.1 kg of lean mass.

Navy method vs. BMI

BMI only compares weight to height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat — a heavily muscled person and a person carrying excess fat can share the same BMI. The Navy method instead measures circumferences tied directly to fat distribution, so it distinguishes a lean, muscular build from a fat-dominant one far better than BMI alone.

That said, the Navy method still has blind spots: it does not see visceral (internal) fat directly, and results depend heavily on careful, consistent measurement technique. Use it alongside BMI and, ideally, a periodic professional body-composition scan.

If your body fat and lean mass move in the direction you want — fat down, lean mass steady or up — your training and nutrition are working, even if the scale barely moves.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?
In studies against DEXA scans (the gold-standard body-composition scan), the Navy method typically lands within about 3–4 percentage points for most people. It is more accurate than BMI at estimating actual body fat, but less precise than DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, or a skilled caliper technician.
Where exactly do I measure my neck, waist, and hip?
Measure your neck just below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward at the front. Measure your waist at its narrowest point, usually level with your navel, without pulling the tape tight. Measure hips (women only) at the widest point around your buttocks. Keep the tape snug but not compressing skin, and measure standing relaxed, not flexed.
Why does the formula need my neck measurement?
Neck size correlates with lean frame size and is subtracted from waist (and hip, for women) to approximate abdominal fat independent of skeletal build. It is one of the reasons the Navy method outperforms BMI at distinguishing fat from frame.

Why do men and women use different formulas?
Women naturally carry more essential fat than men (roughly 10–13% versus 2–5%) and store proportionally more fat around the hips, so the female formula adds hip circumference and uses different regression constants to reflect that distribution.
Is the Navy method better than BMI?
For estimating actual body composition, yes — it directly measures circumferences tied to fat distribution rather than inferring from weight and height alone. A muscular person with a small waist will score appropriately lean under the Navy method even if their BMI reads as overweight.
Can I use inches instead of centimetres?
This calculator takes centimetres, but you can convert inches to centimetres by multiplying by 2.54 before entering your measurements. The underlying formula itself is computed in inches either way.
