How this calculation works

This calculator uses the widely cited guideline of about 33 ml of water per kilogram of body weight as a baseline daily fluid need for a sedentary adult in a temperate climate.

It then adds roughly 12 ml per minute of moderate physical activity to cover extra fluid lost through sweat, since exercise and heat both raise how much water your body needs.

The total in milliliters is converted to liters, standard 240 ml cups, and 250 ml glasses so you can track intake however is easiest for you.

Worked example

A 70 kg person who exercises for 30 minutes needs about 70 × 33 = 2,310 ml from body weight, plus 30 × 12 = 360 ml from activity, for a total of 2,670 ml — roughly 2.67 liters, 11.1 cups, or 10.7 glasses of water per day.

Why body weight drives the estimate

Larger bodies have more tissue, more blood volume, and a higher metabolic rate, all of which raise baseline fluid turnover. That is why hydration guidelines are usually expressed per kilogram of body weight (commonly 30–35 ml/kg) rather than as one fixed number for every adult.

This calculator uses 33 ml/kg as a practical midpoint, then layers on an activity allowance since sweat losses during exercise can easily exceed baseline needs on their own.

What are signs I'm not drinking enough water?
Common early signs of dehydration include thirst, dark yellow urine, dry mouth, headache, fatigue, and dizziness. Urine that is pale straw-colored is a simple everyday indicator that intake is generally adequate.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes, though it is uncommon. Consuming extremely large volumes in a short time can dilute blood sodium levels (hyponatremia), which is a real risk mainly for endurance athletes who overhydrate during long events. For typical daily drinking spread across the day, this is rarely a concern.
Should I drink more water in hot weather?
Yes. Heat and humidity increase sweat losses even without exercise, so add extra fluid on hot days the same way you would for a workout — this calculator's activity-minutes input is a reasonable stand-in for extra heat exposure too.
