The Chinese hamster is a shy, gentle, and curious rodent that rarely bites and, once tamed, becomes one of the calmest hamsters to hold. It is strictly solitary and territorial as an adult, so it prefers to live alone and defends its space from other hamsters. With its long, mouse-like tail and slender body, it is an agile climber that loves to explore and can even grip and hang from cage bars.

The Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) is native to the grasslands, semi-deserts, and rocky steppes of northern China and Mongolia. It was originally brought into laboratories as a research animal and, because inbred lines spontaneously develop diabetes, later became a well-known model organism before entering the pet trade.

Being a highly active and athletic hamster, it needs a solid (rungless) exercise wheel of at least 20 cm and plenty of nightly running to burn off energy and stay lean.
