November brings the first hard frosts, heated homes, and shorter walks — the month when cold-weather hazards move to the top of the list. From antifreeze spills to reptile heating checks, small preparations now prevent emergencies deep in winter.
🐕Antifreeze and Rat Poison: Peak Poisoning Season
As cars are winterized, sweet-tasting ethylene glycol antifreeze drips onto driveways — a single teaspoon can be fatal to a cat, and dogs readily lick up spills. Rodents are also moving indoors, so rodenticide use spikes: keep baits in pet-proof stations and go straight to the vet if you suspect ingestion, because the antidote only works within the first few hours.

Cold nights expose weak heating setups: verify basking-spot and cool-end temperatures with a digital thermometer and run every heat source through a thermostat, because a ceramic heater that fails on a frosty night can chill a reptile past recovery. If you plan to brumate a tortoise or bearded dragon, book a health check and fecal test first, then taper food for two to three weeks so the gut is empty before temperatures drop.

Rhinoceros and stag beetle larvae are in a key feeding phase, so give them fresh fermented flake soil (or a new kinshi bottle for stags) before the cold arrives — they will bulk up on it all winter. Keep containers at roughly 18–23 °C; an unheated hallway that drops near freezing stalls growth or kills larvae, and the substrate should stay just moist enough to clump, never soggy.

Below about 15 °C a hamster can slip into torpor — a limp, cold, barely-breathing state that owners often mistake for death — so keep cages at a steady 18–24 °C, away from windows, exterior doors and unheated rooms. Move outdoor rabbit and guinea-pig hutches into a shed or indoors now, add extra hay for burrowing, and check water bottles twice daily once nights approach freezing.

Once pond water stays below about 10 °C, stop feeding koi and goldfish — their digestion shuts down and uneaten food rots in the water — and net the pond so falling leaves don't decay in it over winter. Indoors, test your aquarium heater against a separate thermometer now, because heater failures show up exactly when room temperatures plunge.
