Cats are even smaller than most dogs, so a lick of wine, beer or spirits can be enough to cause serious poisoning. Ethanol depresses the nervous system and can lead to low blood sugar, low body temperature and breathing problems.
Keep glasses, punch bowls and bar tools off counters. Do not leave rum-soaked desserts or yeast dough where a curious cat can jump. Some liquid medicines and sanitizers also contain ethanol.
Any known ingestion is a reason to call a veterinarian the same day. Do not induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to.
