Can dogs eat Kimchi?
Typically avoid — kimchi is built on onion, garlic, salt and spice.
📋What to know
Classic napa kimchi is seasoned with garlic, onion or green onion, ginger, salted seafood and chili. Onion and garlic (alliums) damage red blood cells in dogs and cats; veterinary sources treat allium ingestion as toxic, not a “spicy treat.” Salt load can be high enough to cause sodium problems if a dog eats a bowl.
Fermentation does not make alliums safe. White kimchi and “mild” restaurant kimchi still usually contain garlic. Oil, sesame and leftover stew (kimchi jjigae) add fat and more onion.
This is not grape-type kidney toxin and not chocolate, but it is still a food to keep off the floor during 명절. If a dog eats more than a stolen shred, call a vet or poison hotline with an estimate of amount — do not wait for pale gums as a home test.
🍽️How to serve it
None. Do not offer kimchi.
🚨Warning signs to watch for
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Lethargy or weakness
- Pale gums or rapid breathing (seek care)
- Drooling from spice
❓Frequently asked questions
Is well-fermented kimchi safer because garlic “cooks”?
No. Fermentation does not reliably destroy allium toxins. Treat kimchi as an onion-garlic food. Do not use fermentation as a safety argument.
What about a tiny bit of white kimchi without chili?
White kimchi is still usually garlic- and onion-seasoned and salty. Chili is not the only problem. Skip it.
Can cats eat kimchi for “gut health”?
No. Cats do not need spicy fermented cabbage. Alliums and salt outweigh any probiotic marketing. Use a complete cat food; ask a vet about true GI issues.
