Indoor cats still need hunting sequences, vertical space, and predictable play. This is welfare, not a diagnosis of “bored cat disease.” Sudden hiding, not eating, or straining in the litter box is a veterinarian visit, not a new wand toy.
Play like a hunt, then feed
Two or three short chase-and-catch sessions a day beat one hour of a laser the cat never “kills.” End with a meal or a treat so the sequence finishes. Rotate a small set of toys; novelty matters more than a drawer of unused wands.
Scratching posts that are tall and stable save sofas. Punishing scratching teaches the cat to hide the behaviour, not to use the post.
Height, hiding, and litter math
A window perch and one high shelf change an empty floor into a territory. Provide a hiding box that is not the same as the carrier you only use for the vet.
Litter: one box per cat plus one, scooped daily. “Enrichment” will not fix a painful bladder. If the cat visits the box often and produces little, that is urgent care, not a puzzle feeder problem.
