Salamanders and newts are among the most rewarding "look, don't touch" amphibians you can keep — living jewels that thrive in a cool, planted vivarium and can share your home for a decade or more. This guide covers six popular kinds — the Tiger salamander, Fire salamander, Eastern newt, Fire-belly newt, Spanish ribbed newt, and Marbled salamander — which fall into two broad camps: burrowing land salamanders and semi-aquatic or aquatic newts. Success comes down to keeping them cool, keeping their environment clean and stable, and resisting the urge to handle them.

Is a Salamander right for you?

Salamanders and newts are display animals, not companion pets. They do not bond with people, dislike being handled, and spend much of their lives hidden under substrate, wood, or leaf litter — a Tiger or Marbled salamander may stay burrowed for days. If you want an animal to interact with, a salamander will disappoint you; if you find a naturalistic, cool-water vivarium and a secretive, ancient-looking amphibian genuinely fascinating, it can be one of the most satisfying pets in the hobby. All six kinds here are quiet, odor-free (when the enclosure is clean), and undemanding of your attention.

The single most important thing to understand is temperature. These are cool-climate amphibians, not tropical reptiles. Most thrive between roughly 15–22 °C (60–72 °C), and Fire salamanders and newts prefer the cooler end. They do not use a heat lamp — in fact, sustained temperatures above the mid-70s Fahrenheit (about 24 °C) cause stress, appetite loss, and death. If you live somewhere warm and cannot keep a room reliably cool, or you cannot afford an aquarium chiller, these animals are not a realistic choice.

Two further realities set expectations. First, all of these species have toxic skin secretions as a defense (covered below), and every amphibian can carry Salmonella, so they are a poor fit for very young children or homes where hand-washing discipline is unreliable. Second, this is a long commitment: Tiger salamanders commonly live 10–16 years, newts 10–15+, Spanish ribbed newts often 15–20, and Fire salamanders can exceed 20 years, with exceptional individuals living far longer. You are signing up for a decade-plus of stable, cool husbandry.

Choosing a healthy Salamander

A healthy salamander or newt looks plump and well-muscled, not thin, with a rounded (never sunken) belly and a full, undamaged tail — newts especially store fat and condition in the tail. The skin should be clear of open sores, red patches, cottony fuzz, or excessive sloughing, the eyes bright and not cloudy or sunken, and the toes and tail tip intact rather than eroded. An alert animal that reacts when the enclosure is opened, moves with coordination, and takes food is a good sign; avoid any that float helplessly, gasp at the surface, sit bloated, or have a kinked spine or swollen limbs. Ask to see the animal eat before you buy.

Always favor captive-bred animals over wild-caught. This matters enormously for newts: Fire-belly newts (Cynops) in particular are still frequently imported wild-caught and arrive dehydrated, parasite-laden, and stressed, with high early death rates. Eastern newts are also commonly wild-collected. Captive-bred Spanish ribbed newts, Tiger salamanders, Fire salamanders, and Marbled salamanders are hardier, better-adjusted, and far less likely to introduce disease. A reputable breeder can tell you the animal's age, feeding history, and often its parents.

Legality is not optional homework here. In the United States, a Lacey Act rule enacted to slow the spread of the deadly Bsal (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans) fungus lists roughly 200 salamander and newt species as "injurious," restricting their import and interstate transport — this affects Fire-belly newts, Spanish ribbed newts, Fire salamanders, and others, so buying across state lines may be illegal. Collecting native species from the wild (Eastern newt, Tiger salamander, Marbled salamander) is regulated or prohibited in many states and often requires a permit, and Tiger salamanders are further restricted in places because of their use and misuse as fishing bait. Check your national, state, and local rules before you acquire any animal, and never release a captive amphibian into the wild — it can seed disease into native populations.

Housing & enclosure setup

Match the enclosure to the animal's lifestyle. Tiger salamanders, Marbled salamanders, and Fire salamanders are terrestrial, burrowing woodland species: give them a land vivarium with 8–15 cm (3–6 in) of moist, burrowable substrate — organic topsoil, coconut fiber, or a soil/coco/sphagnum mix — topped with leaf litter, cork bark, and hides. A single Tiger salamander does well in a 60–75 L (roughly 20–29 US gallon / 24–36 in) footprint; more floor space always beats height. Provide a shallow water dish they can climb in and out of easily. Fire salamanders like it damp and cool with plenty of cover and live moss; Marbled salamanders are smaller and secretive but need the same deep, moist bedding for burrowing.

Newts are semi-aquatic or aquatic and need water, not just a dish. Fire-belly newts and Eastern newts (in their adult aquatic phase) do best in a paludarium — a filtered aquatic section 10–20 cm deep with easy exits onto a land area of moss, plants, and cork. The Spanish ribbed newt is the most aquatic and the hardiest of the group: keep it in a filtered aquarium roughly 75 L (20 gal) or larger for one adult, largely full of water with a smooth-stone or planted bottom and a floating platform or plants to rest under; being fully aquatic and forgiving, it is the best beginner choice here. Note that Eastern newts pass through a terrestrial juvenile "red eft" stage before returning to water as adults, so their setup changes with age. Keep water shallow and provide firm footing — aquatic newts are weak swimmers and can tire.

Three specifics make or break the setup. Water: always dechlorinate tap water (chlorine and chloramine burn amphibian skin and gills) and use gentle filtration for aquatic newts, since they are messy but sensitive to strong current. Temperature: no heat lamp — keep the enclosure at cool room temperature and, in warm climates, use a cooler room, a fan, ice bottles, or an aquarium chiller to hold it under about 22–24 °C. Humidity and substrate safety: terrestrial species need consistently moist (not swampy) substrate and 70–90% humidity, kept damp by misting and a secure lid; avoid gravel or bark chips small enough to be swallowed, which cause fatal impactions. Finally, every enclosure needs a tight, secure lid — salamanders and newts are determined, capable escape artists that can climb silicone and squeeze through small gaps, and an escaped amphibian desiccates and dies quickly.

Feeding & diet

All six kinds are strict carnivores that eat live or, for aquatic newts, thawed frozen prey. The backbone of a good diet is earthworms and nightcrawlers — nutritious, well-accepted, and appropriately sized when chopped for smaller mouths. Round this out with variety: gut-loaded crickets, roaches (dubia), isopods, and the occasional waxworm for terrestrial Tiger, Fire, and Marbled salamanders; and aquatic foods such as blackworms, bloodworms, blackworm/earthworm pieces, brine shrimp, and small pellets or frozen foods for Fire-belly newts, Spanish ribbed newts, and aquatic-phase Eastern newts. Feed prey no wider than the space between the animal's eyes to prevent choking and impaction.

Dust or supplement to prevent nutritional disease. Insect prey should be lightly coated with a calcium powder and, once or twice a week, a reptile/amphibian multivitamin with vitamin A and D3; earthworms are nutritionally strong and need less supplementation. A calcium-poor, insect-only diet is a common cause of metabolic bone disease, especially in growing animals.

Frequency depends on age and species. Growing juveniles eat small meals daily or every other day; adults typically eat every 2–3 days. Terrestrial salamanders have slow metabolisms and are easy to overfeed into obesity — a well-fed Tiger salamander should be rounded, not bulging. For aquatic newts, offer only what they finish in a few minutes and promptly remove uneaten food, because decaying prey fouls the water fast. Daily & weekly care routine

Daily care is light. Check the temperature and, for terrestrial species, that the substrate is still damp; mist as needed to maintain humidity. Do a quick visual health check — is the animal an appropriate weight, moving normally, and free of new sores? Remove any visible waste or uneaten food, and top off or lightly change the water dish for land species. For aquatic newts, glance at water clarity and the filter, and remove leftover food after each feeding. Feed on the schedule your animals need (juveniles daily-ish, adults every 2–3 days).

Weekly and monthly tasks keep the system stable. For aquatic and semi-aquatic newts, do partial water changes of roughly 25–40% with dechlorinated water each week (more if you skip a filter), and periodically test for ammonia and nitrite, which must stay at zero — poor water quality is the number-one killer of newts. For terrestrial salamanders, spot-clean waste as you see it and refresh or replace substrate when it starts to smell or break down. Clean the water dish, wipe the glass, and check that the lid still seals tightly every escape-prone amphibian will test it.

Be honest about handling: these are hands-off animals. All six kinds secrete skin toxins, their skin absorbs oils, salts, soaps, and lotions from your hands, and every amphibian can carry Salmonella. Handle only when necessary (a health check or moving them), keep it brief, first wet your hands with dechlorinated water, never handle with lotion or soap residue on your skin, and wash thoroughly afterward — never touch your eyes, mouth, or any cut before washing. Enrichment comes not from interaction but from a good environment: deep substrate to burrow in, multiple hides and cork bark, leaf litter, live plants and moss, and gentle low lighting on a natural day/night cycle. A well-furnished enclosure lets the animal express natural burrowing and foraging behavior, which is where the real reward of keeping them lies.

Health & common problems

Amphibians do not "molt" like reptiles, but they do shed their skin regularly and usually eat it, so you may rarely see it happen. Trouble shows up when shedding becomes patchy, constant, or the skin looks dull, filmy, or ragged — this is almost always a symptom of a husbandry problem (dirty water, wrong humidity, or the wrong temperature) or an underlying infection, not a shedding disorder in itself. The fix is to correct the environment first: check water quality, humidity, and especially temperature.

The most common serious ailments are infection-driven. "Red-leg" (a bacterial septicemia, often Aeromonas) shows as reddened skin on the belly and limb undersides, lethargy, and death if untreated. Saprolegnia, a fungal infection, appears as cottony white tufts on aquatic newts and thrives in dirty or too-warm water. Other frequent problems include metabolic bone disease from calcium/vitamin deficiency (soft jaw, bent limbs, weakness), gut impaction from swallowed substrate (a bloated animal that stops passing waste), ammonia or chlorine skin burns from unconditioned or dirty water, bloat/edema (a fluid-swollen, balloon-like body signaling organ or water-balance failure), and heat stress from temperatures that are simply too high.

Learn the warning signs and act early: loss of appetite, unusual lethargy, weight loss or a sunken belly, bloating or floating, gasping at the surface, cloudy or sunken eyes, red or ulcerated skin, and cottony growths. Many issues can be reversed by immediately correcting temperature and water quality, but skin infections, red-leg, impaction, bloat, MBD, and any animal that stops eating for more than a week or two need a veterinarian — specifically an exotics or herp/amphibian-savvy vet, as most general practices cannot treat these species. Aquatic newt keepers should add a gentle filter, and anyone in a warm climate should seriously budget for cooling — a fan and ice bottles are cheap, but an aquarium chiller is a significant one-time expense that may be unavoidable to keep temperatures safe. A reasonable one-species setup, plus the animal itself (captive-bred salamanders and newts are generally inexpensive to moderately priced), is a meaningful but not extravagant initial outlay.

Ongoing costs are low compared with most pets. Food is cheap — earthworms, cultured insects, and frozen aquatic foods cost little per month — and supplements (calcium and multivitamin) last a long time. Recurring expenses are mostly water conditioner, replacement substrate, replacement filter media for newts, and electricity, which is minimal unless you run a chiller (which can be the largest hidden running cost in a warm home).

The costs people underestimate are veterinary care and time-based commitment. Exotic-vet visits are not cheap, and few clinics treat amphibians, so factor in the possibility of travel and specialist fees for infections or impactions. Spread across a 10–20+ year lifespan, the true cost of ownership is dominated less by any single purchase and more by years of consistent water conditioner, food, electricity for cooling, and the occasional vet bill — modest per month, but real over a decade or two.

Common beginner mistakes

1. Keeping them too warm. The most lethal beginner error is treating a salamander like a reptile and adding a heat lamp, or simply leaving the tank in a warm room. These are cool-climate animals; sustained temperatures above the mid-70s Fahrenheit cause stress, refusal to eat, and death. Measure the actual enclosure temperature and plan active cooling if your home runs warm.

2. Buying wild-caught newts. Cheap wild-caught Fire-belly and Eastern newts are often loaded with parasites and stress-related disease and die within weeks. Insist on captive-bred animals, which are hardier and far less likely to carry pathogens — and also legally cleaner given import and interstate-transport rules.

3. Using loose gravel or oversized prey. Small gravel and bark chips get swallowed during feeding and cause fatal gut impactions, and prey items that are too large do the same. Use safe substrate (or feed off tongs/a dish) and keep prey no wider than the space between the eyes.

4. Neglecting water quality and dechlorination. Filling a newt tank with untreated tap water burns their skin, and skipping water changes lets ammonia build to toxic levels — the leading cause of newt death. Always condition the water and do regular partial changes; test ammonia and nitrite for aquatic species.

5. Handling too much (and underestimating the commitment).
