Heatstroke in dogs is a known emergency: a parked car, midday pavement, and short-nosed breeds stack the risk. This page is prevention and “go to emergency now” language, not a home-cooling protocol you should follow instead of a clinic.
Cars and pavement are the usual stories
A closed car heats faster than the outdoor air. “I will only be a minute” is how many heat deaths start. If you would not sit in that cabin, the dog should not.
Asphalt and dark sand burn pads. If you cannot hold the back of your hand on the ground for several seconds, skip the walk or go at dawn. Brachycephalic dogs (Pugs, French Bulldogs, similar faces) cool poorly and need shorter outings.
What heatstroke looks like — then leave
Heavy panting, collapse, bright-red or grey gums, vomiting, or a dog that cannot stand after a hot walk is emergency veterinary care. Cool water on the body while you travel can help; do not delay the car ride for a perfect home protocol, and do not force ice-water immersion because a social post said so.
Cats and rabbits overheat in hot rooms too. Shade and water are not optional in summer.

How hot is too hot to walk a dog?
There is no single safe thermometer number for every coat and skull shape. Midday sun plus pavement is the usual bad combo. Walk at cooler hours. Brachycephalic and obese dogs need extra caution. This is not a personal heat index for your postcode.
Is a fan enough in a parked car with windows cracked?
No. Cracked windows and a portable fan do not make a closed cabin safe in sun. Take the dog with you or leave them at home.
Can I shave my dog for summer?
Double coats often protect from sunburn and some heat when left intact; shaving can backfire. Ask a groomer who knows the breed and a vet if the dog has skin disease. Do not shave cats at home as a heat hack.
Do I wait to see if they recover on the couch?
If you suspect heatstroke, go to emergency. Waiting is how treatable cases become fatal. Call the clinic while you drive so they can prepare cooling and oxygen.
