Tarantulas are among the most rewarding low-maintenance exotic pets: long-lived, quiet, odorless, and endlessly fascinating to observe, with beginner-friendly species like the Chilean Rose and Curly Hair costing little to keep. But they are display animals, not cuddly companions — most are best admired through glass, all can bite, and every New World species (Mexican Red-knee, Pink Toe, Curly Hair, Greenbottle Blue, Brazilian Black, Goliath Birdeater) carries urticating (irritating) bristles it can flick at you. This guide covers the eight kinds above plus the fast, defensive Old World Cobalt Blue, so you can choose the right spider and keep it well for years — or in the case of females, decades.

Is a Tarantula right for you?

Tarantulas suit people who want a striking, hands-off animal that fits on a shelf, eats a few crickets a week, and never needs walking, grooming, or company. They are silent, take up little space, and cost only pennies a day to feed. Females of hardy species such as the Chilean Rose (Grammostola rosea), Brazilian Black (Grammostola pulchra), and Mexican Red-knee (Brachypelma hamorii) routinely live 15–25 years or more, so this is a genuinely long commitment — longer than a dog. Males of nearly all species live far shorter lives (often only 3–7 years total) because they die within a year or two of their final maturing molt.

Be honest about what a tarantula is not. It is not a pet you handle, train, or bond with; it does not recognize you and gains nothing from being held. Handling is where most injuries and deaths happen — a fall of even a foot can rupture a tarantula's abdomen and kill it, and a startled spider can bite or kick urticating bristles into your skin and eyes. If you want an interactive animal, a tarantula will disappoint you. If you find watching a burrow, a web build, or a molt genuinely absorbing, it may be perfect.

Match the species to your experience. Docile, slow, forgiving New World terrestrials — Chilean Rose, Curly Hair (Tliltocatl albopilosus), Brazilian Black, Mexican Red-knee — are the classic first spiders. The Greenbottle Blue (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) is stunning and hardy but skittish; the Pink Toe (Avicularia avicularia) is an arboreal that needs cross-ventilation and can be a fast jumper. The Cobalt Blue (Cyriopagopus lividus) and Goliath Birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) are advanced: the Cobalt is a fast, defensive Old World burrower with potent venom and no urticating bristles, and the Goliath is the world's heaviest spider, with large fangs and famously irritating bristles. Beginners should start with the docile group and earn their way up.

Choosing a healthy Tarantula

Buy captive-bred, always. Reputable breeders and specialist invertebrate dealers sell captive-bred (CB) spiderlings and juveniles that are hardier, better acclimated, parasite-free, and ethically sound. Wild-caught (WC) imports are often dehydrated, stressed, carrying nematodes, and depleting wild populations — Mexican red-knee species in particular were historically over-collected. If a seller can't tell you the species' scientific name and whether it's CB, walk away. Spiderlings are cheapest and let you watch the animal grow, but juveniles and unsexed sub-adults are more forgiving for a first-timer; confirmed females are worth paying more for given their far longer lifespan.

Assess condition before you commit. A healthy tarantula has a plump, rounded abdomen (not shriveled, but not stretched shiny-tight, which risks rupture), stands up on its legs rather than lying with legs curled underneath, and moves deliberately when nudged. A tarantula curled into a tight ball with legs tucked beneath it is a serious warning sign of dehydration or dying. Look for an intact spider with all eight legs (missing legs regrow over molts but signal rough handling), no oozing or discolored patches on the abdomen, and no lethargy paired with a sunken body. A bald patch on the abdomen is usually just a New World spider that has kicked off bristles and is normal.

Check the legality and paperwork for your area. Several Brachypelma and Tliltocatl species (including the Mexican Red-knee and some Curly Hair populations) are listed on CITES Appendix II, so international movement requires permits and legal captive-bred stock matters. Some jurisdictions — certain U.S. states and cities, parts of Australia, and others — restrict or ban keeping tarantulas or importing them, and shipping live spiders across some borders is prohibited. Verify your local and national rules before buying, keep any receipts or CITES documentation, and never accept a smuggled or undocumented import.

Housing & enclosure setup

Size the enclosure to the spider's body plan, not to "bigger is better." For terrestrial species (Chilean Rose, Mexican Red-knee, Curly Hair, Brazilian Black, Greenbottle Blue, Goliath Birdeater) floor space matters more than height, and the enclosure should be only about 2–3 times the spider's leg span wide, with the height above the substrate kept low — no more than roughly 1.5 leg spans — so the spider cannot climb the walls and take a fatal fall. A common adult terrestrial home is a 20–40 cm / 8–16 inch wide plastic or glass enclosure with a secure locking lid; the giant Goliath Birdeater needs a much larger floor (a 45–60 cm / 18–24 inch footprint). Arboreal Pink Toes are the exception: give them a tall enclosure with vertical cork bark, plants, and strong cross-ventilation. Fossorial Cobalt Blues need a deep substrate layer (15–20 cm / 6–8 inches) they can tunnel into and will spend most of their life underground. Escape-proofing is critical — tarantulas are strong, and a Cobalt Blue or Pink Toe can bolt startlingly fast — so every lid must latch and every gap must be smaller than the spider's carapace.

Substrate, hides, and water are the core furnishings. Use a few inches of chemical-free coconut fiber (coco coir), peat, or a topsoil/coco mix — deep enough for burrowers to dig and for terrestrials to grip, and deep for Cobalt Blues and Goliaths in particular. Provide a hide (a piece of cork bark, a half log, or a cork tube) for security; a stressed, exposed tarantula stays skittish. Include a shallow water dish with clean, dechlorinated water at all times for any spider large enough not to drown in it (juveniles and up); slings too small for a dish can be kept hydrated with a drop of water on the substrate or a lightly misted corner. Skip heat lamps, hot rocks, sand, gravel, and sharp decor — they cook or injure spiders.

Heat and humidity should mimic each species' origin, and both are easy to get wrong. Most of these tarantulas thrive at ordinary room temperature, roughly 20–26 °C / 68–79 °C, and rarely need supplemental heat; if your room drops below the high teens Celsius, warm the room or use a thermostat-controlled low-wattage heat mat on the side (never under) the enclosure, and never let it exceed about 28 °C / 82 °F. Humidity is where beginners over-fuss: arid-origin species (Chilean Rose, Mexican Red-knee, Greenbottle Blue) want a mostly dry setup with just a water dish and only occasional light dampening of one corner, and stale, wet, unventilated air kills them faster than dry air. Feeding & diet

Tarantulas are pure carnivores that eat live invertebrate prey. The staple diet is appropriately sized feeder insects — crickets, dubia or discoid roaches, locusts, and mealworms or superworms — sized so the prey is no larger than the spider's body (a good rule is prey roughly the length of the tarantula's carapace or smaller). Large adults, especially a Goliath Birdeater, can also take the occasional pre-killed pinky mouse, but this is not necessary and insects should be the mainstay; a purely insect diet is healthiest and cleaner. Gut-load feeder insects with vegetables or commercial gut-load before offering them, so your spider gets well-nourished prey.

Feed to the spider's stage and body condition rather than on a rigid clock. Fast-growing spiderlings can be fed small prey every 3–5 days; juveniles roughly twice a week; and adults only once every 1–2 weeks, sometimes less. A tarantula's abdomen is your fuel gauge: a nicely rounded abdomen means it's well fed, while a shrunken abdomen means feed more and a tight, shiny, over-stretched abdomen means slow down, since an overfed spider risks a fatal abdominal rupture from a fall. It is completely normal for tarantulas to refuse food for days, weeks, or even months — before a molt, during winter cool-downs, or for no obvious reason — and a plump spider that fasts is not sick.

Remove uneaten prey and never feed during a molt. Take out any live insect the spider hasn't eaten within about 24 hours: a hungry cricket or roach left in the enclosure will gnaw on a resting or freshly molted, soft-bodied tarantula and can injure or kill it. Stop feeding entirely when your tarantula stops eating and starts to look pre-molt (darkened abdomen, dull color, lethargy, sealing itself in), and do not offer food again until several days to a week after it has molted and its new fangs have hardened. Always provide clean water regardless of feeding schedule — dehydration, not hunger, is the more common killer.

Daily & weekly care routine

Day to day, tarantula care is minimal — which is exactly the appeal. Each day, glance at the spider to confirm it's alive, positioned normally (upright, not curled or on its back unexpectedly), and that nothing is obviously wrong; top up or refresh the water dish as needed and remove any leftover prey or boluses (the dried pellets of indigestible insect parts the spider discards). That is genuinely the entire daily obligation for a healthy adult. Feeding happens on its own weekly-to-biweekly rhythm rather than daily.

Weekly and monthly tasks are light spot-cleaning and monitoring. Once a week, scan for mold, remove any dead feeders, uneaten food, boluses, and shed exoskeletons, and check that temperature and humidity are in range for the species. Terrestrials in dry setups may need one corner lightly moistened; tropical species need the damp zone and water dish kept up. A full substrate change is needed only occasionally — every several months to a year, or when the substrate is soiled or moldy — and should be done gently, ideally coaxing the spider into a cup rather than grabbing it. Keep a simple log of molts and feeding refusals; it helps you distinguish a normal pre-molt fast from a genuine problem.

Be realistic about handling and "enrichment." The honest reality is that tarantulas gain nothing from being handled and are put at real risk by it — a drop can be lethal, and a defensive spider can bite or, in New World species, kick urticating bristles into your skin and eyes. Old World species like the Cobalt Blue should never be free-handled: they are fast, defensive, lack the warning of urticating bristles, and have a more painful, cramp-inducing venom. If you must move a spider, use the catch-cup method (coax it into a deli cup and slide a lid underneath) close to a soft surface. "Enrichment" for a tarantula means giving it a proper environment to express natural behavior — a burrow to dig, cork bark to web on, prey to hunt — not interaction with you. The reward of this hobby is observation, not touch.

Health & common problems

Molting is the single most important — and most misunderstood — health event. Tarantulas grow by shedding their exoskeleton, and in the pre-molt phase they darken, dull in color, refuse food, seal off burrows, and often flip onto their backs (or side) to molt. A tarantula on its back is molting, not dying — do not disturb it, do not touch it, do not offer food, and make sure no live prey is in the enclosure. Molting can take from under an hour to most of a day; afterward the spider is extremely soft and vulnerable, its fangs are white and unhardened, and it must be left completely alone for about a week before feeding. A bad molt — where the spider gets stuck, tears a limb, or fails to free itself, often due to too-low humidity — is a genuine emergency and one of the more common causes of injury or death.

Most other problems trace back to environment, dehydration, or trauma. A tarantula curled tightly with its legs pulled underneath (the "death curl") signals severe dehydration or dying, and often a dish of water and a slightly dampened enclosure is the first-response fix. Chronic over-humidity and poor ventilation cause mold and fatal fungal/bacterial infection, especially in arid species — dry them out and improve airflow. Watch for stuck shed on the legs, fluid or dark patches leaking from the abdomen, or dyskinetic syndrome (DKS) — uncoordinated, jerky, trembling leg movements — which can follow pesticide exposure, a bad molt, or unknown causes and is often fatal. Never keep pesticides, flea foggers, treated wood, or scented aerosols anywhere near the enclosure; tarantulas are exquisitely sensitive to airborne toxins.

Know the venom and bristle reality, and when to seek help. No tarantula among these species has venom known to be deadly to a healthy human, but a bite hurts and Old World species like the Cobalt Blue can cause intense pain, swelling, and muscle cramps lasting days. New World species defend themselves by flicking urticating bristles, which cause itching, rashes, and — if they reach the eyes — serious, sometimes lasting ocular irritation, so wear eye protection during maintenance and never rub your face. Seek human medical care for any bite causing severe symptoms, for a suspected allergic reaction, or for any bristles in the eye. For the spider itself, find a veterinarian experienced with exotics or invertebrates if you see a suspected internal infection, an unstoppable fluid leak, a serious molt injury, or DKS symptoms — invertebrate vets are uncommon, so locate one before you need one.

Cost of ownership

Initial setup is modest and dominated by the enclosure and the spider. A hardy, common spiderling or juvenile — Chilean Rose, Curly Hair, Greenbottle Blue — is inexpensive, while sought-after or slow-growing species (Brazilian Black, confirmed-female Mexican Red-knee, adult Goliath Birdeater) cost considerably more, and a mature female always commands a premium for her long life. Beyond the animal, budget for a properly sized, secure enclosure, a bag of coco-fiber substrate, a hide (cork bark or cork tube), and a shallow water dish. Optional extras include a thermometer/hygrometer, and — only if your home runs cold — a thermostat-controlled heat mat. All told, the one-time outlay is low compared with most pets, and for room-temperature-tolerant species you can often skip heating gear entirely.

Ongoing costs are genuinely tiny. The main recurring expense is feeder insects — a handful of crickets or roaches every week or two — which can be bought in small quantities or, more cheaply, sustained with a self-breeding roach colony. Add occasional substrate replacement (a few times a year to annually), the small cost of dechlorinated water, and modest electricity if you run a heat mat in winter. A single adult tarantula costs very little per month to maintain, and a lot of that can be zeroed out with a home feeder colony.

The costs people forget are the contingencies and the time horizon. Exotic-vet care is rarely needed but expensive and hard to find when it is, so it's worth knowing where an invertebrate-savvy vet is in advance. Factor in replacement gear as spiders grow and need larger housing, and the multi-decade commitment for a female — years of feeder purchases, substrate, and stable housing conditions. There are no vaccination, grooming, or boarding costs, but a long-lived female should be planned for like any pet that may outlast a decade of your life, including who will care for her if your circumstances change.

1. Handling the spider. The most common and most dangerous mistake is picking a tarantula up. A full water dish plus good ventilation does the job; keep most of the enclosure dry for desert species and dampen only a zone for tropical ones. Wet-and-stale is deadlier than dry.

3. Panicking during a molt or disturbing a molting spider. A tarantula on its back is molting, not dead — poking it, feeding it, or flipping it over can injure or kill it. Leave a molting spider completely alone, remove all live prey, and don't feed until about a week after, when the new fangs have hardened.

4. Leaving live prey with the spider and mis-sizing food. An uneaten cricket or roach left overnight will chew on a resting or freshly molted tarantula.
