How this calculation works

The Epley formula estimates 1RM as weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). It is simple, slightly favors higher rep counts, and is the formula most barbell apps default to.

The Brzycki formula estimates 1RM as weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). It tends to run a touch lower than Epley at moderate rep ranges and is undefined at 37+ reps, so above that the calculator falls back to Epley alone.

Your result is the average of both formulas (or the raw weight if you entered exactly 1 rep, since a single rep already is your max). Averaging two independently-derived formulas smooths out the quirks of either one alone.

Worked example

You bench 100 kg for 5 reps. Epley estimates 100 × (1 + 5 ÷ 30) = 116.7 kg. Brzycki estimates 100 × 36 ÷ 32 = 112.5 kg. Averaging the two gives an estimated 1RM of about 114.6 kg — the number this calculator would show.

Why accuracy drops at higher reps

Both Epley and Brzycki assume a roughly linear relationship between reps and fatigue. That assumption holds reasonably well up to about 10 reps, but beyond that muscular endurance and lactate tolerance start to matter as much as maximal strength, so the formulas increasingly overestimate or underestimate depending on the lifter. If you regularly train in the 12–20 rep range, treat any 1RM estimate from those sets as a rough ballpark rather than a number to program against.

Estimating from a submaximal set is safer than testing a true single-rep max, especially for beginners, lifters training alone, or anyone returning from injury. If you do decide to test a true 1RM, use a spotter or safety pins on barbell lifts, and never chase a max when your form is breaking down or you're training to exhaustion elsewhere in the session.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is an estimated 1RM?
Within about 5–10% for sets of 10 reps or fewer performed close to failure. Accuracy drops off fast beyond 10–12 reps because the formulas were built from lower-rep data, and endurance/fatigue starts to matter more than raw strength.
Which formula is more accurate, Epley or Brzycki?
Neither is uniformly better — they were derived from different datasets and tend to agree closely around 8–10 reps, with Epley running a bit higher at very low reps and Brzycki running a bit higher near 1–2 reps. Averaging both, as this calculator does, is a common way to split the difference.
What rep range gives the most reliable estimate?
1–10 reps performed to or near technical failure. Sets of 1–5 reps give the tightest estimates since less fatigue accumulates; by 12+ reps the error margin grows enough that the number should be treated as a rough guide, not a target for programming.
Does this work for any exercise?
It works best for compound barbell lifts — squat, bench press, deadlift, overtake press — where strength is the limiting factor. It is less reliable for isolation exercises, machines, or highly technical lifts like the Olympic snatch and clean & jerk.
Should I actually test my 1RM instead of estimating it?
A true 1RM test is more accurate but carries more injury risk and fatigue, especially for beginners or without a spotter. Most lifters estimate from submaximal sets for programming and only test a true max occasionally, if at all.
Does this store my weight or rep data?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded, logged, or saved anywhere.
Can I use kilograms or pounds?
Either — the calculator is unit-agnostic. Whatever unit you enter the weight in, the estimated 1RM, Epley, and Brzycki results come back in that same unit.
