How this calculation works

Pace is simply your total time divided by distance covered, expressed as minutes and seconds per unit distance: seconds per km = total seconds ÷ kilometres. The per-mile pace converts that using 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

Speed is the inverse relationship, expressed as distance per hour instead of time per distance: km/h = distance ÷ (total seconds ÷ 3600). Mph is speed in km/h divided by 1.609344.

Pace and speed carry the same information in two different shapes — runners tend to think in pace ("I run 5:00 per km"), while speed is more familiar from cars and bikes ("I run 12 km/h"). This calculator gives you both so you can use whichever your training plan, watch, or treadmill displays.

Worked example

A runner covers 10 km in 50 minutes flat (0:50:00). Total time is 3,000 seconds, so pace = 3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds per km = 5:00 /km. Converting to miles: 300 × 1.609344 = 482.8 seconds per mile ≈ 8:03 /mi. Speed is 10 km ÷ (3,000 ÷ 3,600) = 12 km/h, or 12 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 7.46 mph.

Pace vs. speed: same run, two units

Runners and race organisers almost always talk in pace — minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile — because it maps directly onto splits on a race clock: if your goal pace is 5:00/km, you know you should pass each kilometre marker on the 5, 10, 15-minute mark, and so on. Speed (km/h or mph) is the same information turned upside down, and it's more familiar from treadmill displays, cycling computers, and everyday driving.

Neither is more "correct" — pick whichever matches the tool you're pacing off. This calculator gives you both from a single distance-and-time entry, so you can check a treadmill speed setting against a known race pace, or convert a watch split into km/h.

Using pace to plan a race

Work backwards from your goal finish time: divide it by the race distance to get your required average pace, then check the table above (or plug your own distance and time into the calculator) to see if that pace is realistic given your recent training paces. Many runners hold their easy-run pace on race day for a half marathon or marathon, and something noticeably faster only for a 5K or 10K, because shorter races draw more on speed and less on endurance.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply your seconds-per-km by 1.609344 (the number of kilometres in a mile) to get seconds per mile, then convert back to minutes and seconds. A rough shortcut: pace per mile is about 1.6× your pace per km, so a 5:00/km pace is roughly 8:03/mi.
What pace do I need to run a sub-4-hour marathon?
A marathon is 42.195 km, so a 4:00:00 finish needs an average pace of 14,400 seconds ÷ 42.195 km ≈ 341.4 seconds/km, which is about 5:41 /km (roughly 9:09 /mi). Enter distance 42.195 and hours 4 into the calculator to confirm, or check the pace-to-finish-time table below for other target times.
Does this calculator store my times or distances?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or saved anywhere.
Why does my GPS watch show a different pace than my official race time?
GPS distance is an estimate that drifts with satellite signal, tree cover, tunnels, and tight turns, so watches commonly read 1–3% longer than the certified race distance. Official race pace is always based on the certified course distance, not your watch.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
There's no universal number — a comfortable "conversational" pace where you can talk in full sentences is a better beginner target than any fixed time. Many new runners land somewhere around 6:30–8:00 /km (about 7.5–9.2 mph) for easy runs, but going by effort rather than pace avoids overtraining early on.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
They describe the same movement two ways: pace is time per unit distance (minutes per km or mile), speed is distance per unit time (km/h or mph). Pace is generally more useful for planning a race split, while speed is easier to picture as a treadmill setting.
How do negative splits work?
A negative split means running the second half of a distance faster than the first half — for example finishing 21.1 km in 1:04 then the next 21.1 km in 1:01. It's a widely used race strategy because starting conservatively preserves glycogen and reduces the risk of the late-race fade caused by going out too fast.
