Sleep Cycle Calculator (90-Minute Bedtime / Wake Times)

Popular sleep apps treat adult sleep as ~90-minute cycles and suggest waking at the end of a cycle. This page subtracts (or adds) a fall-asleep buffer plus 4, 5, or 6 cycles from a clock time you choose. Real cycle length varies, and sleep architecture is not a metronome. Not medical advice, not a treatment for insomnia.

How this calculation works

From a wake time: bedtime candidates = wake − fall-asleep minutes − N × cycle minutes, wrapped around the 24-hour clock, for N = 4, 5, 6.

From a bedtime: wake candidates = bedtime + fall-asleep + N × cycle, for N = 4, 5, 6.

Default cycle is 90 minutes and default fall-asleep is 15 minutes. Both are yours to edit. Five cycles is 7.5 hours of sleep plus the buffer before lights-out math.

The 90-minute idea is a classroom average. Infants, shift workers, and people with sleep disorders do not fit this grid. If you cannot sleep, talk to a clinician rather than stacking more cycles.

Worked example

Wake at 07:00, 15-minute buffer, 90-minute cycles → 6-cycle bedtime 21:45, 5-cycle 23:15, 4-cycle 00:45. Bed at 23:00 → 5-cycle wake 06:45.

Frequently asked questions

Is 90 minutes scientifically exact?
No. Adult NREM–REM cycles are often in a 90-minute neighborhood, but length changes through the night. Treat 90 as a heuristic.
How many cycles should I aim for?
Many adults feel better near 5–6 (about 7.5–9 hours plus falling asleep). The CDC and similar bodies talk in hours, not cycles. This is not a personal recommendation.
Why a 15-minute buffer?
Time in bed before sleep onset. If you fall asleep immediately, set it to 0. If you lie awake 40 minutes, use 40.
Naps?
A single 90-minute nap is one cycle in this model. Short “power naps” are a different idea (often 10–20 minutes).
Can this fix insomnia?
No. Chronic insomnia needs proper care. Caffeine late in the day also wrecks any bedtime math — see the caffeine-remaining calculator.
Are times stored?
No. Browser only.
