How this calculation works

Concrete volume is simply length times width times depth: Volume = L × W × D. All three dimensions must be in the same unit (metres here), which is why depth — usually given in centimetres — needs to be converted to metres first (10 cm = 0.10 m).

The cubic-metre result is converted to cubic yards using the standard factor 1 m³ = 1.30795 yd³, since ready-mix trucks and many US suppliers quote and sell concrete by the cubic yard.

For the bag count, one 80-lb bag of dry ready-mix concrete yields about 0.017 m³ (roughly 0.6 ft³) once mixed with water. Dividing your total volume by 0.017 and rounding up gives the minimum number of full bags — buy a few extra to cover spillage and an uneven subgrade.

Worked example

A patio slab measuring 4 m long, 5 m wide, and 10 cm (0.10 m) deep has a volume of 4 × 5 × 0.10 = 2 m³, which equals about 2.62 yd³. If you buy bagged concrete instead of ordering a ready-mix truck, that's 2 ÷ 0.017 = 117.6, rounded up to 118 bags of 80-lb premix.

Ready-mix vs. bagged concrete: the break-even point

Ready-mix trucks are batched to order, but most suppliers charge a minimum-load fee once you're under about 1 cubic yard (roughly 0.75–1 m³), and a 'short load' surcharge on top of that for small deliveries. Bagged concrete has no delivery minimum and lets you mix exactly what you need, but the material cost per cubic metre is meaningfully higher and hand-mixing 100+ bags is a serious physical job.

As a rule of thumb: under about 1 m³, buy bags. Between 1–2 m³, compare local bag pricing against the short-load fee. Above 2 m³, ready-mix delivery almost always wins on both cost and labor.

How much extra concrete should I order for waste?
Add about 5–10% on top of the calculated volume to cover spillage, uneven subgrade, form leakage, and minor measurement error. For a 2 m³ pour, that means ordering roughly 2.1–2.2 m³. Ready-mix suppliers often round up to their truck's minimum load anyway.
Ready-mix delivery vs. bags — which is cheaper?
For small jobs (under roughly 1 m³, about 1.3 yd³) bagged concrete is usually cheaper and more practical since most ready-mix suppliers have a minimum order or a short-load surcharge. Above that volume, a ready-mix truck is almost always cheaper per unit and far less labor since you skip hand-mixing dozens of bags.
How deep should a concrete slab be?
A typical pedestrian patio or walkway is 10 cm (4 in) deep. A driveway for cars needs 10–15 cm (4–6 in), and a driveway that will see heavier vehicles benefits from 15–20 cm (6–8 in). Footings and structural slabs vary by local building code — check requirements before pouring.

How much does an 80-lb bag of concrete actually cover?
One 80-lb bag yields about 0.017 m³ (0.6 ft³) of mixed concrete. That's enough for roughly a 60 cm × 60 cm area poured 5 cm deep, or about a 0.15 m² area at 10 cm deep — small areas add up to a lot of bags fast.
Can I use this for footings or foundations, not just slabs?
Yes — the length × width × depth formula works for any rectangular concrete pour, including footings, foundation walls (treat wall thickness as the 'depth'), fence-post footings, and equipment pads. For round footings, use the area of a circle instead of length × width.
What if my slab has an irregular shape?
Split it into rectangles (and triangles, if needed), calculate the volume of each section separately with this same formula, and add the volumes together for your total.
