How this calculation works

The tool first finds the room's wall perimeter (2 × (length + width)) and multiplies it by the wall height to get total wall area. It then subtracts an allowance for doors (1.8 m² each) and windows (1.5 m² each) to get the actual paintable area, since you don't paint over openings.

Litres needed = paintable area × number of coats ÷ your paint's coverage rate (m² per litre). Coverage rate varies by paint brand, finish, and the surface's porosity, so check the tin or product data sheet for the true figure rather than guessing.

Ceilings are not included in this estimate — measure the ceiling area separately (length × width) and divide by your coverage rate if you're painting it too.

Worked example

A 4 m × 3 m room with 2.4 m walls, one door, one window, and 2 coats at 10 m² per litre coverage: perimeter = 2 × (4 + 3) = 14 m, wall area = 14 × 2.4 = 33.6 m², openings = 1.8 + 1.5 = 3.3 m², paintable area = 33.6 − 3.3 = 30.3 m². Paint needed = 30.3 × 2 ÷ 10 = 6.06 litres.

How to measure a room for painting

Why coats and primer matter

A single coat rarely gives even, opaque colour — brush and roller marks, patchy absorption, and the underlying colour usually show through. Two coats is the standard recommendation for most interior walls, and it's baked into this calculator's default.

If you're painting over a much darker or very different colour (for example, white over dark red), consider a grey or tinted primer coat first. Primer seals porous surfaces so your topcoat covers more evenly and often uses less paint overall, even though it adds an extra coat to the total.

Buy a buffer, not the exact amount

Always round up to the nearest tin size and buy about 10% more paint than the calculator suggests. This protects against measurement error, extra touch-ups, higher absorption than expected, and the risk of a discontinued colour or batch mismatch if you need to buy more later.

How much paint do I need for an average room?
A typical bedroom (around 4 m × 3.5 m with 2.4 m walls) needs roughly 5–7 litres for two coats at standard coverage, but always check your specific room's dimensions and the paint's stated coverage rate.
Why does the calculator subtract for doors and windows?
You don't paint over doors and windows, so their area doesn't need coverage. The calculator uses standard averages (1.8 m² per door, 1.5 m² per window) to estimate the reduction; measure yours directly for a more precise result if they're unusually large or small.
How many coats of paint do I really need?
Two coats is standard for most walls, especially when changing colour or covering a darker shade. A single coat can work for a fresh, unpainted surface in the same colour family, while three coats may be needed for strong colour changes like red or dark navy over white.
Should I buy extra paint beyond the calculated amount?
Yes. Buy about 10% more than the calculated litres to cover touch-ups, uneven surfaces, spills, and future repairs, and to avoid running short mid-coat with a different paint batch.
Does paint coverage change by surface type?
Yes. Rough plaster, brick, or unprimed drywall absorb more paint and lower effective coverage, sometimes by 20–30%, compared to smooth, previously painted walls. Primed and sealed surfaces give closer to the tin's stated coverage.
