How this calculation works

Power is converted to energy first: dailyKWh = watts ÷ 1000 × hours per day. Dividing by 1000 turns watts into kilowatts, since electricity is billed per kilowatt-hour (kWh), not per watt-hour.

That daily energy use is then multiplied by your electricity rate to get a daily cost, and multiplied by the number of days you specify to get the total kWh and total cost for that period.

The yearly figure simply extends the daily cost across 365 days, assuming the appliance keeps the same daily usage pattern all year — useful for comparing appliances that run on a steady schedule.

Worked example

A 1500-watt space heater running 8 hours a day at 0.20 per kWh uses 1500 ÷ 1000 × 8 = 12 kWh a day. Over a 30-day month that's 360 kWh and a cost of 360 × 0.20 = 72.00, or 2.40 a day and about 876.00 a year if run daily all year.

The formula, step by step

kWh used = watts ÷ 1000 × hours run. Multiply that by your rate per kWh to get cost. Everything else — daily, period, and yearly totals — is the same formula applied over a different number of days.

Watch out for phantom loads

Devices left plugged in but switched off — TVs, chargers, game consoles, microwaves with a clock display — still draw a small trickle of power around the clock. A single phantom load might only be 1–5 watts, but a home full of them can add up to real money over a year.

To estimate a phantom load's cost, treat its standby wattage as the 'watts' input and 24 as 'hours used per day'. Unplugging idle electronics or using a switched power strip is the simplest fix.

Why wattage on the label isn't always the real draw

Some appliances list a maximum or peak wattage that the device rarely sustains — a refrigerator's compressor cycles on and off rather than running continuously, and a microwave's printed wattage is its cooking output, not its wall draw (which is usually higher). For the most realistic estimate, use a plug-in watt meter if you have one, or the appliance's average/rated wattage rather than its absolute peak.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find an appliance's wattage?
Check the rating label or nameplate, usually on the back or bottom of the device, or in its manual/spec sheet. If only amps and volts are listed, multiply them together (watts = amps × volts) to estimate wattage.
What is my price per kWh?
Check a recent electricity bill — it usually lists a rate per kWh or lets you divide the total charge by the kWh used. Rates vary by region, provider, and time of day, so use your actual bill for the most accurate result.
Why does my bill not match this estimate exactly?
Utility bills often include fixed service charges, taxes, tiered or time-of-use pricing, and other devices running at the same time. This calculator estimates the cost of one device in isolation using a flat rate.
What is standby or phantom power?
Many electronics draw a small amount of power even when 'off' but still plugged in — TVs, game consoles, chargers, and set-top boxes are common culprits. This phantom load can add several watts of continuous draw; unplugging or using a switched power strip eliminates it.
Does this store my usage or rate data?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or saved.
How can I reduce an appliance's running cost?
Run high-wattage appliances (heaters, dryers, air conditioners) for fewer hours or at lower settings, switch to more efficient models (look for ENERGY STAR or similar ratings), and unplug idle electronics to cut standby draw.
Does wattage change while an appliance runs?
Yes, for many devices. Refrigerators and air conditioners cycle a compressor on and off rather than drawing full power continuously, so their average wattage is lower than their peak wattage. Use the average or nameplate wattage for a rough but realistic estimate.
