Swimming is hard on hair fibres, not a standard cause of androgenetic alopecia. Breakage can look like thinning. True follicle loss needs a different explanation.
Chlorine is an oxidising disinfectant. On hair it can strip oils, roughen cuticles, and fade colour. Salt water and sun add dryness. Wet hair stretches and snaps more easily. The result is shorter, straw-like lengths and more hair in the drain from breakage — which people count as ‘loss’ even when the root is fine. Competitive swimmers sometimes see this plus tight cap traction. None of that is the same as DHT-driven miniaturisation at the follicle.
Practical care: wet hair with clean water before the pool so shafts take up less chlorinated water, wear a snug but not scalp-stripping cap, rinse after, and use a conditioner or occasional chelating wash if metals build up. Do not sandpaper the hair with aggressive towel rubbing. If density is dropping at the temples and crown in a pattern, swimming is an unlikely villain — discuss minoxidil and, for men, finasteride with a clinician.
