Saw palmetto is not a gentler twin of finasteride. Human hair trials are small and mixed. If you cannot take a prescription DHT blocker, you are choosing a lower-evidence path — not a secret equal.
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is sold for prostate comfort and, by extension, as 'natural finasteride.' Extracts may show some 5-alpha-reductase activity in laboratory systems. That is not the same as the large finasteride programmes that supported FDA approval of 1 mg for male pattern loss. Hair studies are few, often tiny, sometimes bundled with other ingredients, and not a substitute for labelled drugs. Supplement bottles are poorly standardised: extract type and milligrams differ, and what is on the label may not match the capsule. NIH herbal summaries are cautious for a reason.
Side effects can include stomach upset. Herbal literature also discusses bleeding and hormonal caveats around surgery and pregnancy — another reason not to self-prescribe if you could become pregnant or have a procedure planned. Do not stack saw palmetto on finasteride assuming double blockade is smarter; tell the clinician everything. People who refuse prescriptions sometimes try it; they should know they are accepting weaker proof, not avoiding all risk.
