An itchy, scaly scalp can push hairs into a shed and make density look worse. Treating the rash is real help. It still is not a substitute for pattern-loss drugs if you also have AGA.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory condition linked to yeast (Malassezia), oil, and skin barrier — the AAD describes it as treatable dandruff's angrier cousin on the scalp, brows, and folds. Inflammation and scratching can increase telogen hairs or break shafts, so the drain looks busier. Grease and scale also coat hair so the part looks wider than the follicle count. That is different from DHT miniaturisation. People often have both: a receding temple plus a flaky crown. Ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, tar, and sometimes short courses of topical anti-inflammatories are clinic-type tools — not a stack you should invent from three bottles at once.
Washing more often with a gentle technique usually helps this disease more than 'saving oils' by avoiding shampoo. If scale is thick, painful, or bleeds, or if you see pus or hair breaking in patches, you may not have ordinary seborrheic dermatitis. Psoriasis, tinea, and scarring alopecias mimic flakes. Do not pick crusts into wounds. Pregnancy and childhood need product-by-product advice from a clinician or pharmacist.
This is not medical advice. If pattern loss is also present, calm the scalp and keep the AGA plan (minoxidil as labelled, prescription drugs only if prescribed). Irritated skin can make minoxidil sting; a dermatologist can sequence treatments rather than telling you to quit everything after one bad week.

Preguntas frecuentes
Will treating dandruff regrow a receding hairline?
It can make remaining hair look cleaner and may reduce inflammation-related shed. A receded temple is still usually androgenetic. Expect cosmetic scalp comfort first, not a new juvenile hairline.
Can I use ketoconazole and minoxidil in the same week?
Often yes, on different days or with a dry scalp before minoxidil, but stinging means you should get a plan. Do not layer five medicated products the night before a wedding.
Is seborrheic dermatitis contagious?
It is not treated like a school-outbreak ringworm. Yeast on skin is common. Still avoid sharing crusty hats and see a clinician if someone in the house has a different-looking rash.
