SMP vs micropigmentation tattoo

SMP can photograph like a buzzed hairline. It does not grow. Walking into a decorative-tattoo shop and asking for “just dots on the scalp” is also not automatically the same craft as trained scalp micropigmentation.

Términos claveMinoxidil

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) uses fine dots of pigment in the upper dermis to simulate the appearance of closely shaved follicles. Decorative body tattoos often sit deeper and use heavier ink loads; a walk-in “tattoo my head” plan can look blotchy as the scalp shines and as pigment migrates. Trained SMP technicians talk about colour match to remaining hair, hairline design, and touch-ups as pigment fades — commonly over years, not as a stamp that never needs a visit. This is cosmetic camouflage: a density illusion. The American Academy of Dermatology discusses camouflage and wigs as options; SMP is a specialist-studio or clinic decision, not a drug like Rogaine or Propecia.

SMP does not treat androgenetic miniaturization. Native hair can still thin around the dots. Combining SMP with a transplant needs a surgeon who understands both, because graft placement and pigment density can clash. Infection and allergy are procedure risks. Tell radiology about scalp pigment before MRI — tattoo and micropigmentation pigments can be relevant to imaging and to rare skin sensations in the magnet. Keloid-prone skin and active scarring alopecias are “ask a dermatologist first” problems, not a Groupon. Laser removal later is often harder than a social-media before-and-after implies; leftover colour shift (unwanted warmth, grey, or blur) is a known complaint.

Brow micropigmentation or a medical areola tattoo is a cousin technique, not a license to DIY the crown with eyeliner. Demand healed-scalp photographs in your skin tone, not only wet day-one shots. This is not medical advice. Minoxidil treats living follicles; SMP is makeup in the skin. They are not substitutes, and timing around fresh pigment sessions belongs to the artist and your clinician.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is SMP a hair transplant?

No. It is pigment. No follicle is moved. Growth will not appear from the dots.

Can any tattoo artist do SMP?

Scalp shine, hairline design, and fade behaviour are specialized. A body-tattoo default depth can look wrong. Inspect healed scalp work, not only arms.

Does SMP last forever without touch-up — and what about MRI or laser later?

Pigment fades; touch-ups over years are commonly expected. Disclose pigment before MRI. Laser removal can be difficult. “Forever, no visits” ads oversell.

Can I still use minoxidil with SMP?

Ask the artist and your clinician about timing around sessions. Rogaine treats living follicles; SMP is camouflage. They do not replace each other.
