When to stop minoxidil before surgery

Topical minoxidil is a cutaneous drug with some systemic absorption. Many dermatologic and hair procedures continue it; some surgeons prefer a dry, unirritated scalp the day of incision. That is a wound-care preference, not a universal “stop seven days” law printed on every U.S. Drug Facts label. Oral minoxidil (Loniten) is an antihypertensive with tachycardia and fluid-retention warnings — anesthesia teams often want it on the medication list with a plan, similar to other blood-pressure drugs. Theoretical concerns include vasodilation and oozing at cut edges; they are not a license to write yourself a hold from a blog. This page will not give a milligram calendar. Hair-transplant clinics sometimes pause topical minoxidil around recipient sites to reduce bleeding or irritation; others restart quickly to limit shock loss. Follow the written protocol from the operating surgeon. Stopping minoxidil for weeks without a plan is how people meet a telogen shed on top of post-op shedding. Blood thinners, aspirin, and fish-oil stacks are a separate pre-op list — do not confuse Rogaine with warfarin. If you use both foam and low-dose oral minoxidil, say so; the exposures add.

Emergency surgery: tell the team you use minoxidil (topical versus oral) rather than delaying the case to finish an internet checklist. Pregnancy-related procedures: topical minoxidil still needs obstetric input. If nobody asked about hair products, volunteer. Photograph your hair before a long hold so you can separate surgical stress from drug withdrawal. Restart only as the surgeon and anesthesiologist permit.
