Saw palmetto vs finasteride

Last updated: 2026-06-14

Both aim to lower DHT, but the evidence gap is large. Finasteride is an FDA-approved, well-studied drug that reliably blocks DHT and slows male-pattern loss. Saw palmetto is a plant extract marketed as a 'natural' DHT-blocker; a few small studies hint at a mild effect, but it is far weaker and much less proven, and supplements are not tightly regulated. If you want a 'natural' add-on and accept limited evidence, saw palmetto is an option — but for real results, finasteride is the proven choice. Discuss prescriptions with a clinician.

Pregnancy warning: Finasteride and dutasteride can harm a developing male fetus. Do not take or handle them if pregnant or possibly pregnant.
