Hair transplant vs scalp micropigmentation (SMP)

Last updated: 2026-06-14

Two very different fixes. A hair transplant moves your own DHT-resistant follicles into thinning areas — it grows real, living hair but is surgery, costs more, and your native hair keeps thinning (so you usually still need medication). SMP tattoos pigment to mimic shaved stubble or add the look of density — it is non-surgical, cheaper and immediate, but it does not grow hair and needs touch-ups. Many people combine them: a transplant for real density plus SMP to fill gaps or hide donor scars.
