Exosomes are cell-derived vesicles. In a hair clinic they are often a premium add-on with thin, heterogeneous evidence — not a licensed equivalent of minoxidil or JAK inhibitors.
An exosome is a tiny particle cells release that can carry proteins and genetic material. Researchers study whether lab-prepared vesicles could signal follicles. That science is early. What is sold in cash-pay chairs may be poorly characterised, imported, or mixed with PRP branding. Manufacturing and dose are not standardised like a tablet. Regulators have warned about unapproved regenerative products in other fields; hair is not magically exempt. Positive before-and-after photos without controls are the usual sales deck.
If a clinic offers exosomes, ask what is in the vial, whether it is autologous or donor-derived, what safety tracking exists, and why you would not first use treatments with decades of hair data. Infection, immune reaction, and wasted money are the realistic downsides. Alopecia areata and scarring disease need a diagnosis, not a mystery serum. Are hair exosomes FDA-approved?
There is no standard FDA-approved exosome drug for androgenetic alopecia that you can treat like minoxidil. Clinics may use loosely regulated products. Approval language in ads is often inflated.
Is an exosome session better than PRP?
PRP at least has a larger (still mixed) trial literature. Exosomes are newer and even less standardised. ‘Better’ in a brochure is not a ranking you should trust without a dermatologist who is not selling the vial.
