Beard grafts are still living follicles that have to hook into facial blood supply. Shock shed is common. Judge density after the better part of a year, not after week two.
Facial hair transplants usually take follicular units from the scalp (often the back and sides) and place them into the beard, mustache, or patchy cheek. The biology is the same as a scalp FUE: the follicle must stay moist, be placed at the right angle, and find a blood supply. Clinics quote high survival when those steps go well; they cannot honestly promise every graft lives. The face has good vascularity, which helps, but it is also a high-motion, high-shave, high-sweat zone. Smoking, picking scabs, and sleeping face-down on fresh grafts are ordinary ways to waste a session. Donor hair on the face will keep scalp-like growth speed, so transplanted beards often need regular trim even if your native beard was slow.
Timeline looks like other transplants: crusts and redness first, then many shafts shed (the follicle is meant to stay), then new growth around months 3–4, with a fair look closer to 9–12 months. Some people need a second pass for density. Infection, ingrowns, cobblestone texture, and a hairline of scalp-caliber tubes that do not match fine cheek down are real aesthetic risks when design or caliber matching is careless. If you still have aggressive scalp pattern loss, remember those donor follicles are leaving a finite bank you may want later for the head. Medicine for androgenetic scalp loss is a separate decision; a beard graft does not treat male pattern baldness.

The visible shaft often sheds in the first weeks. The follicle, if it survived placement, typically cycles back. Permanent loss of the graft means it did not take, not that 'beards reject scalp hair.'
Can I use minoxidil on a new beard transplant?
Not on a schedule from a stranger. Fresh wounds and minoxidil irritation do not mix. Restart only when the surgeon who placed the grafts says the skin can take it.
Is beard FUE more successful than scalp FUE?
The face can be a friendly recipient, but success is still extraction quality, placement, and your healing. It is not automatically easier or higher yield than a well-done scalp case.
