Color does not cancel minoxidil. A burned or broken scalp plus dye plus minoxidil on the same afternoon is how people get a week of pain and a skipped dose streak.
Permanent and demi-permanent dyes change the hair fiber. Topical minoxidil is a scalp drug for androgenetic thinning. Those jobs do not chemically erase each other. What they share is skin. If the scalp is already itchy, peeling, or raw from propylene glycol, alcohol vehicles, or a recent 'dread shed' scratch-fest, adding bleach or oxidative dye raises the chance of a chemical burn and of stopping minoxidil because it stings. AAD-style scalp advice is boring and correct: do not dye over broken skin. Book color when the scalp looks calm. Tell the colorist you use a twice-daily or once-daily leave-on scalp treatment so they do not assume you only use shampoo.
Timing is practical, not mystical. Let minoxidil dry fully before anyone puts foil or a cap on you; wet solution on the pillow is already a transfer problem, and wet solution under dye is a mess. Many people skip the application the morning of a long color appointment, wash as the salon instructs, then restart when the scalp is no longer burning — often that evening or the next day if it is only cosmetic tightness. Do not 'make up' missed doses with extra milliliters. Foam and liquid both need a dry, reachable scalp; a heavy deposit of dye or oil can block contact until you wash. Root touch-ups on an intact scalp are usually easier than a full bleach-and-tone on thinning, sun-exposed crown skin.
This is not medical advice. Patch-test new dyes if you have a history of PPD allergy. Sudden patches, pain, pus, or swelling after color is a dermatology visit, not another box of at-home bleach. Pregnant people should review both hair dye and minoxidil with their own clinician. Minoxidil is highly toxic to cats if they lick treated skin or pillows — color day is a bad day to leave applicators on the floor. Hair dye will not treat pattern loss. Minoxidil will not fix a botched bleach. Keep the jobs separate and the scalp in one piece.

Preguntas frecuentes
Does hair dye block minoxidil from working?
Not if the drug still reaches the scalp after you wash. Thick residue or a burned scalp that makes you stop applying is the real failure mode.
Can I bleach my hair on minoxidil?
Bleach is harsher on scalp skin. Wait until the scalp is calm, skip minoxidil around the appointment if it stings, and do not bleach open sores.
Should I stop minoxidil for a week before every color?
A standing one-week holiday is not required for most intact scalps and costs you consistency. Pause around irritation or the appointment itself if needed, then restart.
