Permanent and demi-permanent dyes change the hair fiber. Topical minoxidil is a scalp drug for androgenetic thinning. Those jobs do not chemically erase each other. What they share is skin. If the scalp is already itchy, peeling, or raw from propylene glycol, alcohol vehicles, or a recent 'dread shed' scratch-fest, adding bleach or oxidative dye raises the chance of a chemical burn and of stopping minoxidil because it stings. AAD-style scalp advice is boring and correct: do not dye over broken skin. Book color when the scalp looks calm. Many people skip the application the morning of a long color appointment, wash as the salon instructs, then restart when the scalp is no longer burning — often that evening or the next day if it is only cosmetic tightness. Do not 'make up' missed doses with extra milliliters. Foam and liquid both need a dry, reachable scalp; a heavy deposit of dye or oil can block contact until you wash. Root touch-ups on an intact scalp are usually easier than a full bleach-and-tone on thinning, sun-exposed crown skin.
