Yes — the carton has an expiry. Using leftover foam from three years ago is not a clever hack. It is also not a reason to panic if you are one week past the printed month.
U.S. over-the-counter minoxidil (Rogaine and generics) is sold as 2% or 5% solution and as 5% foam. The Drug Facts label and the carton print an expiration date. After that date, the manufacturer does not stand behind the stated concentration or the container’s integrity. Liquid vehicles (alcohol, propylene glycol) can evaporate if the cap sits loose, which can concentrate or irritate rather than “make it stronger in a good way.” Foam cans can lose propellant. Pharmacy guidance is ordinary: do not use expired topical drugs as a savings plan. A bottle that changed colour, grew particles, or smells wrong belongs in a take-back bin, not on a thinning crown. Do not mix leftover minoxidil into a new bottle to “top it up.” Do not apply extra millilitres because you fear the old batch was weak — that is how people get more facial hair and light-headedness, not a controlled experiment. Oral minoxidil tablets (Loniten and generics) have their own expiry and are a different conversation — vasodilator tablets are not leftover foam.
