Ferritin reflects stored iron. Heavy periods, low-meat diets, gut malabsorption, and repeated blood donation can empty stores. Telogen effluvium and some female-pattern thinning are more often discussed with iron than classic male Norwood recession, though anyone can be deficient. Dermatology and haematology do not all use the same ferritin target for hair; many hair clinics want a higher number than the generic lab ‘low’ line, but there is no single universally agreed hair-specific cut-off you should chase from a forum. Too much iron is harmful. Do not megadose because a podcast said 80 is the magic number.
A sensible path is a clinician-ordered iron studies panel (not ferritin in isolation if inflammation is present — ferritin rises as an acute-phase reactant), plus thyroid and other basics when shedding is diffuse. Eat iron-rich food; take supplements only as directed, away from tea or calcium if absorption is the issue, and keep tablets far from children. If ferritin is already ample, more iron will not regrow a receding temple. Pattern loss still needs minoxidil and, for many men, a DHT blocker. This is not medical advice.
