Oral Avodart-style dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase story with a long half-life. Painting it on the scalp does not automatically zero the blood level.
U.S. dutasteride prescribing information is written for oral capsules in benign prostatic hyperplasia, with warnings about blood donation (long half-life) and pregnancy (male-fetus risk from handling leaking capsules). Hair clinics compound topical dutasteride in solvents; that is not an FDA-approved hair foam analogous to minoxidil. Pharmacokinetic papers show transdermal absorption can still move serum DHT. The American Academy of Dermatology’s pattern-loss conversation still centres labelled minoxidil and oral finasteride where appropriate — compounded 5-ARIs are a specialist off-label discussion. Is it FDA approved for hair?
Oral dutasteride’s U.S. label is BPH, not male-pattern hair foam. Compounded topical is not that approval.
Shorter blood-donation wait if topical?
Do not assume. The oral insert’s donation warning exists because of half-life. Ask the blood centre and the prescriber.
Can I mix dutasteride with minoxidil at home?
No kitchen compounding. Stability, dose, and irritation are pharmacy problems.
Safer in a pregnancy household?
Topical residue and leaking bottles are still handling risks. The insert’s pregnancy message does not vanish because the route changed.
