My partner is pregnant — what about finasteride?

✓ Revisione medica✍️ Redazione HairBase📅 Ultimo aggiornamento: 14 giugno 2026⏱ 1 min di lettura
💡 In breve

The 1 mg Propecia-style label and the 5 mg Proscar-style label both treat pregnancy as a handling and exposure question. Crowdsourcing a milligram for your partner is not what those inserts are for.

U.S. prescribing information for finasteride states that women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets because of the risk to a male fetus (abnormalities of the external genitalia in animal studies and the drug’s mechanism of blocking DHT). Intact film-coated tablets are the labelled handling story. The American Urological Association and dermatology societies discuss sexual and pregnancy counselling as a clinician conversation, not a Reddit taper. This page will not invent a semen-wait calculator and is not medical advice.

If a pregnancy is planned or confirmed, the person taking finasteride needs their prescriber — not a hair forum — to decide whether to stop, when, and whether another option (topical minoxidil on-label, procedures) belongs on the table. Do not split or crush tablets to “share a dose.” Do not apply crushed powder as a topical. Dutasteride has its own longer half-life and blood-donation rules; that is a different insert.

A partner who already handled a broken tablet should call the prescriber or a teratogen/poison resource rather than wait for a home test. This page does not name a “safe number of days.” Keep tablets in the original bottle, away from children. This is not medical advice.

Avvertenza in gravidanza: Finasteride e dutasteride possono danneggiare un feto maschio in sviluppo. Non assumerli né maneggiarli se sei in gravidanza o potresti esserlo.

Domande frequenti

Can my pregnant partner touch a whole tablet?

The labelled concern is crushed or broken tablets. Ask the pharmacist and prescriber for the product you actually have. Do not crush tablets at home.

Does semen transmit a dangerous dose?

The insert discusses exposure. The numerical risk is a clinician conversation, not a forum milligram. Do not invent a condom protocol from this page.

Should I stop the night we find out?

Call the prescriber. Stopping and restarting hair drugs has its own shedding timeline. This page is not a stop-start protocol.

Is topical finasteride safer in this situation?

Compounded topical finasteride is not a U.S. OTC switch with the same insert. Ask the prescriber. Do not assume zero systemic exposure.
