ASMBS educational material and many bariatric dietitians warn that hair thinning three to six months after surgery is common and often telogen. Iron, zinc, protein, B12, and folate are monitored because malabsorption is the point of some operations — extra iron is still harmful if you are not low, which is why labs exist. The American Academy of Dermatology treats telogen as timing plus exam. Do not start oral minoxidil or finasteride in the early postoperative window without the bariatric team and a dermatologist. Will hair grow back after the shed?
Telogen often improves as weight stabilises and labs are replete. Pattern loss can coexist. Photograph and ask.
Is zinc the missing hair mineral?
Zinc can be low after some bypasses. Extra zinc causes copper deficiency. Labs and the dietitian, not a mega-zinc protocol.
Can I color my hair during the shed?
Shafts are more fragile. Gentle cosmetics. Color does not treat telogen.
Does this mean I need a transplant now?
Surgeons usually want a stable weight and a diagnosis. Telogen is a waiting game. Do not book grafts on month three from a fear post.
