What Is a Standard Score?

Raw scores (items correct, milliseconds) are not comparable across ages or tests. A standard score rescales them so that, in a reference sample, the mean and spread are fixed. This site does not convert game hits into that scale.

Raw score vs standard score?

A raw score is the count or time you produced. A standard score maps that onto a distribution (often mean 100, SD 15 for IQ-style metrics, or z = 0, SD = 1). Without a norm sample, there is no honest standard score.

What about percentiles?

A percentile is a rank in a reference group. It is not the same number as a standard score, though they can be translated if the distribution is specified. Web games here show hits and ms, not percentiles of a national sample.

Is IQ just a standard score?

Deviation IQ is a family of standard scores from a standardized battery. Subtests may use scaled scores (often mean 10, SD 3) that are then combined. One flanker run is not that procedure.

Why not just convert my hits?

Conversion tables come from carefully sampled norms, not from a volunteer website. Inventing an IQ from 20 trials would be misleading.

Floor and ceiling?

If almost everyone maxes or fails a short set, standard scores compress. That is a measurement problem, not proof of genius or deficit.

How should I practice here?

Try pattern-matrices-lite or flanker-lite to see raw hits. Read this page so you do not mistake a raw count for a Wechsler scaled score.

Test–Retest Reliability

If you take a test twice, the number often moves. Psychometrics calls the stable part reliability and the bouncing part error, practice, mood, sleep, or a different form. A web game score is especially noisy.

IQ and Job Performance

Industrial-organizational research often finds that general mental ability predicts job performance better in more complex roles, with validity coefficients that are real but far from 1.0. This article is descriptive. It is not a recommendation to choose or reject a career from a web score.

Nutrition and Cognition

Brains run on ordinary metabolism. Skipping meals, dehydration, and extreme restriction can make attention feel worse in the short run. That is not the same as a supplement raising IQ, and this site does not sell or endorse pills.

Heat and Test Scores

Hot, poorly ventilated rooms make many people slower and more irritable. Research on ambient temperature and exam or cognitive-task performance is mixed but often points to discomfort and attention costs — not a rewritten intelligence.

Smartphones and Attention

A phone buzz is a cue to switch. Task-switching and interruption costs are well known in cognitive psychology. That is not the same headline as “smartphones reduce IQ,” which oversells messy, correlational literatures.
