Is it scalp psoriasis or dandruff?

💡 In breve

White flakes in the sink are not one disease. Treating plaque psoriasis like a shampoo-only dandruff week can waste months.

The American Academy of Dermatology distinguishes plaque psoriasis — well-demarcated erythematous plaques with silvery scale, sometimes across the hairline onto the forehead — from seborrheic dermatitis, which prefers greasy yellow scale in the scalp, brows, and nasolabial folds. Overlap (“sebopsoriasis”) exists; that is why guess-and-buy ketoconazole 1% forever is a weak plan. This site already has a seborrheic-versus-dandruff explainer; this page is the psoriasis contrast. Nail pitting, inverse psoriasis, and joint pain belong in a rheumatology-aware dermatology visit. This is not a diagnosis and not medical advice.

Steroid scalp solutions, vitamin D analogues, and biologics are prescription paths for psoriasis — not biotin. Ketoconazole 2% schedules, if used, follow the antifungal label for seborrheic disease, not as a psoriasis cure. Minoxidil irritation can mimic scale; do not stack without a diagnosis. Phototherapy is a clinic tool, not a tanning bed protocol.

Sudden widespread pustules or fever is urgent care, not a new tar shampoo. This is not medical advice.

Domande frequenti

Will dandruff shampoo clear psoriasis?

It may soothe scale. Plaque psoriasis often needs a dermatology plan. Failure of 1% ketoconazole is a clue, not a moral failing.

Is it contagious?

Psoriasis is not an infection you catch. Tinea can look scaly — that one can spread and needs a different drug.

Does psoriasis cause baldness?

Chronic picking and inflammation can thin hair. True scarring alopecias are another exam. Do not assume AGA.

Can I use minoxidil on plaques?

Irritant vehicle on inflamed plaques is a bad mix. Treat the diagnosis first. Ask the dermatologist.
