The ‘dread shed’ is extra telogen hair coming out in the first weeks of minoxidil. It often means follicles are cycling, not that the bottle is poisoning you. It still deserves a sanity check if it looks wrong.
Minoxidil shortens telogen and can move follicles into anagen. Hairs that were already scheduled to fall may come out together, so the shower drain looks worse before counts look better. This can happen with topical foam or liquid and with oral minoxidil. Timing is often within the first one to two months, not five years in. The shed should be diffuse, not coin-shaped bald spots, and the scalp should not be raw, pustular, or scarred. Because you also lose a baseline hundred-or-so hairs a day, the combination feels dramatic. Photographs in the same light beat memory.
Most people are advised to continue if the picture fits a telogen flush and they can tolerate the product. Stopping and restarting repeats the cycle. Irritation from propylene glycol in some liquids can cause extra breakage that is not true dread shed — foam or a different vehicle may help. If you are pregnant or trying, minoxidil is not a casual experiment; ask your clinician. Dread shed is not a reason to add random oils or to double the dose. How long does minoxidil shedding last?
For many people the extra shed eases after several weeks to a couple of months as the cycle resets. If it is still violent at six months, or the pattern looks like patches, get examined rather than waiting for a mythic ‘month 12 dump.’
Does a dread shed mean minoxidil is working?
It can mean follicles are shifting phase, which is the intended pharmacology. It is not a guarantee of a great cosmetic result. No shed also does not prove the drug failed.
