Postpartum hair loss: why it happens and how long it lasts

A lot of hair coming out after a baby is usually a hormone-shift telogen effluvium, not instant pattern baldness. Most people improve over the following months without a transplant.

During pregnancy, higher estrogen can keep more follicles in the growth phase, so hair often looks thicker. After delivery those follicles can enter the resting phase together and shed a few months later — classically around the time many parents notice a ‘hair storm’ on the pillow and in the shower. This is telogen effluvium, typically diffuse, including the temples and hairline, and frightening because the volume looks sudden. It is not the same as androgenetic thinning, though the two can overlap later, and it is not proof that breastfeeding is damaging the follicles. Iron, thyroid, and calorie or protein gaps can make shedding worse and are worth checking if recovery stalls.

Most postpartum telogen effluvium improves over about six to twelve months as the cycle desynchronises again. Gentle styling, treating iron deficiency if present, and patience do more than biotin marketing. Minoxidil is sometimes discussed if shedding is prolonged, but it is a drug decision in breastfeeding and pregnancy — do not start or stop it from a forum. Finasteride and dutasteride are not postpartum hair vitamins; they have fetal-harm warnings. See a clinician promptly for round bald patches, scalp pain, pus, broken hairs from tight styles, or loss that is still severe after a year. This is not medical advice and does not replace your obstetric or dermatology follow-up.

Perguntas frequentes

When does postpartum hair loss usually start?

Many people notice heavier shed a few months after birth, not on the day they leave hospital. Timing varies. A delay of a couple of months fits a telogen shift better than overnight baldness.

Will my hair go back to how it was before pregnancy?

Often density looks much closer to your pre-baby baseline once the synchronized shed finishes, but pregnancy can also unmask pattern thinning that was going to appear anyway. Photos and a clinician help sort which you have.
