How long does telogen effluvium last?

💡 Resposta rápida

Telogen effluvium is a synchronised shed of resting hairs. Acute cases often improve over months after the trigger ends; shedding that stays heavy past six months deserves a medical work-up.

Hair cycles through growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and rest (telogen). A shock — high fever, surgery, crash dieting, new medication, thyroid swings, postpartum hormone drop, or severe stress — can push a larger share of follicles into telogen. You usually see the extra hairs two to three months later, not the week of the insult. The shed is typically diffuse; the scalp can look thinner all over without a classic Norwood or Ludwig map. A pull test may be positive in active TE. It is not scarring. Follicles are still there, which is why the prognosis is often good if the trigger is gone.

Acute TE commonly eases within about six months, though cosmetic density can lag while new hairs grow. Chronic TE lasts longer than six months or keeps repeating; clinicians then look for iron problems, thyroid disease, nutrition, medications, and sometimes overlapping pattern loss. Minoxidil is sometimes used to support regrowth; it can cause its own early shed and is a clinician decision. Do not assume TE is ‘just stress’ if you have bald patches, scale with pus, broken hairs, or a receding scarred hairline. This is not medical advice. Track dates of illness, childbirth, or new drugs and bring that timeline to a dermatologist if shedding is severe or not improving.

Perguntas frequentes

Can telogen effluvium last a year?

Acute TE is often improving well before a year. If heavy shed continues past six months, it may be chronic TE or another diagnosis, and it is reasonable to see a doctor rather than waiting on willpower.

Does hair grow back after telogen effluvium?

In classic acute TE, follicles are not destroyed, so hair usually returns as the cycle resets. Recovery can look slow because new hairs are short. Persistent thinness can mean a second process such as pattern loss.
