Rosemary oil vs minoxidil

Last updated: 2026-06-14

Minoxidil is a proven, FDA-approved treatment with strong, repeated evidence; rosemary oil is a low-risk natural option with one encouraging trial. That 2015 study found rosemary oil performed about as well as 2% minoxidil over six months, with less itching — but it was a single small study against the weaker 2% strength, not the 5% most people use, and the overall evidence for rosemary is far thinner. For meaningful or fast-progressing loss, minoxidil (often with finasteride) is the reliable choice. Rosemary oil is a reasonable add-on or an option for those who cannot tolerate minoxidil, but it should not replace proven treatment when real density is at stake. Both must be used continuously and both take about six months to judge. Use rosemary as a complement, not a substitute.
