If PRP helps, the calendar rarely ends after one syringe. Clinics talk in induction courses and top-ups. That is a practice pattern — not a lifetime vaccine and not a substitute for a hair transplant.
PRP is your own blood spun to concentrate platelets, then injected into the scalp. Devices used to prepare PRP may be FDA-cleared as equipment; that is not the same as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approving PRP as a baldness drug. The American Academy of Dermatology describes PRP among options some dermatologists offer for androgenetic alopecia, and it is frank that trial quality is mixed: protocols, spin methods, and “response” definitions differ. A common clinic pattern is roughly monthly sessions for about three months, then photographs. People who thicken often return for maintenance — frequently discussed every 6–12 months, individualized, not a stopwatch printed on a kit. Duration of benefit is not identical for every scalp, and some people do not respond in a way they can see.
PRP does not move follicles. It does not replace on-label topical minoxidil (Rogaine and generics) or finasteride (Propecia) when those are otherwise appropriate for pattern loss. Shock shedding after injection can happen. Infection is uncommon if sterile technique is real — it is still a clinic-hygiene question. Cost is often out of pocket. A single celebrity session is marketing, not a protocol. Stacking unlicensed “exosome” or “stem-cell” add-ons as if they were PRP with a longer last-date is a different, poorly regulated story. If you stop maintenance, any PRP-associated thickening can recede toward your genetic baseline, the same family of problem as stopping other non-curative treatments. Compare photographs under the same lighting. A board-certified dermatologist should say whether the loss is scarring alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen, or pattern — PRP is not a universal syringe. Do not skip a diagnosis because a med-spa sold a package of six.
