Red and near-infrared light devices can be a reasonable adjunct for pattern thinning. Expect modest change, expensive hardware, and a lot of branding around ‘NASA’ and ‘FDA approved’ that needs decoding.

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) uses red or near-infrared wavelengths intended to stimulate follicle cells. Several randomised trials and device studies report small increases in hair counts versus sham caps. The average effect is not dramatic. Protocols (wavelength, irradiance, minutes, days per week) are not identical across brands, so buying the cheapest Amazon cap is not the same as using the unit in a paper. FDA 510(k) clearance for a laser cap generally means the device is substantially equivalent to a predicate and meets safety manufacturing standards — it is not a drug-style efficacy approval like minoxidil’s.

LLLT will not resurrect scarred follicles or replace JAK inhibitors for severe alopecia areata. It pairs better with proven topicals and oral therapy than as monotherapy in established androgenetic alopecia. Consistency matters more than a week of twice-daily sessions then quitting. Eye safety: use the device as directed; do not stare into lasers. Pregnancy data are limited; treat it as optional hardware, not a prenatal requirement. This is not medical advice. If a salesperson says the helmet is ‘FDA-approved to cure baldness,’ ask them to show the actual clearance language.

FAQ

Is red light the same as a dermatology laser for hair removal?

No. Hair-removal lasers are meant to damage pigmented follicles. LLLT uses much lower energy aiming to stimulate, not destroy. Using a removal laser to ‘treat baldness’ is the wrong tool.

How often should I use a laser cap?

Follow the specific device instructions; many consumer caps are several times a week, not all day. More hours is not a proven shortcut and can just be heat and inconvenience.
