Ketoconazole shampoo is a decent scalp adjunct for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, and a weak extra for pattern hair loss. Small studies only — not a cure and not a DHT-blocker substitute.

Ketoconazole is an antifungal used in shampoos (often 1% over the counter in some countries, 2% by prescription in others). It reduces Malassezia yeast and scalp inflammation, which is why it helps dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. For androgenetic hair loss, interest comes from anti-inflammatory effects and a possible mild anti-androgen action at the follicle. The clinical literature is small and not in the same league as FDA-approved minoxidil or finasteride. Using it two to three times a week as a lather-and-leave-on-the-scalp wash is a common routine; daily harsh use can dry hair shafts even if the scalp feels cleaner.

If your main problem is greasy scale, itch, and redness, treating that condition can make hair look thicker because less hair is coated and broken. That is not the same as reversing miniaturisation. Brand names vary by country; the ingredient and strength matter more than marketing that says ‘hair growth shampoo.’ People who are pregnant should ask a clinician or pharmacist before using medicated shampoos, especially prescription-strength products. Pair ketoconazole with proven therapy when the diagnosis is pattern loss, and see a dermatologist if scale is thick, painful, or leaving bald patches. This is not medical advice.

Perguntas frequentes

Can I use ketoconazole instead of minoxidil?

No. Treat it as a supporting shampoo. Minoxidil and, for many men, finasteride have far stronger evidence for pattern hair loss. Ketoconazole does not replace them.

How long should I leave ketoconazole on my scalp?

Follow the label for your strength. Many people lather and leave it a few minutes before rinsing so the scalp, not just the lengths, gets contact. More minutes is not a proven way to grow more hair.
