Ozempic / GLP-1 hair loss

Last updated: 2026-06-14

Rapid weight loss on a GLP-1 — semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) — can trigger telogen effluvium, a temporary all-over shedding. A 2025 review of ~84,000 people found GLP-1 users were about 3.4 times more likely to report hair loss, though in trials the absolute rate was roughly 3-6%. It is the rapid weight loss and lower food intake — not direct drug toxicity — that pushes follicles into the resting phase. Shedding usually starts 2-4 months in and recovers within 6-12 months. What helps: enough protein (often under-eaten on a GLP-1), checking ferritin, B12 and zinc, and not stopping your GLP-1 without your prescriber. Minoxidil can support regrowth.
